Beginner’s Guide to ‘Avengers: Infinity War’
I know this is generally a theatre blog, but Avengers: Infinity War is too big not to talk about. We are less than a couple of weeks out from the release of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’! This movie is set to be the end of the MCU as we know it. This project has been kept so guarded that even cast members were given fake scripts.
The Russo Brothers are about to bring about a new era of sci fi movies, not just the superhero category. Ryan Coogler just set a new precedent in superhero movies, becoming the third highest grossing US movie of all time. The Russos are maybe the only directors/writers that could follow Coogler in this arena.
The Russos aren’t making a superhero movie, they’ve taken inventory of the MCU and approaching this like any other project. Coogler and the Russos are setting the standard, 13 years after Christopher Nolan with ‘Batman Begins’.
But for those of us that are not inclined to this genre of film but want to see the movie, here’s your beginner’s guide.
Captain America: Civil War is the jumping off point of this arc, so at the top of this movie, there is no active avengers team. The team is fractured during ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Splitting the team into two, Team Cap and Team Stark, lead by Iron Man (Tony Stark) and Steve Rodgers (Captain America). Civil War is now on Netflix, digital, and DVD and a great movie!
Civil War was the first preview of where the MCU is headed, it was the first outing of both Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spiderman. The Black Panther and Spiderman are the two titles that in my opinion, that are going to push this universe to deeper and more comic based storylines.
After that, we meet Doctor Stephen Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch). He’s the introduction of magic into the MCU, meaning he’s going to bring about an entirely new phase of the universe. His movie is more closely related to the Thor movies, in their use of mythology and magic. You can find it on Netflix, Digital Streaming and on DVD.
Then we meet the best team in outer space, The Guardians of the Galaxy. We pick up in Volume 2 with a team that has come together but still working out its kinks. If you enjoyed the first one, you’ll enjoy this and Spiderman: Homecoming. It’s just as quirky as you want it to be with the best CGI visuals in recent cinematic history to back it up. Find it streaming and on Netflix.
Spiderman: Homecoming is the Spiderman movie we deserve. It is the perfect storm, rebooted without the re-casting of an Uncle Ben and with a classic spidey villain. It checks everything off the list, it’s funny, action packed, and makes you look forward to watching years of Tom Holland swinging across your screen.
Then we hit by far the funniest and best, Thor movie to date. Thor Ragnarok somehow found the perfect puzzle pieces to bring you the best movie possible. The visuals alone are astonishing and Oscar worthy. There’s a buddy film vibe that just makes it a better story. Check it out digital streaming and on DVD.
Next is the movie event that’ll change the game for representation in these movies. Representation of People of color specifically, this movie showed that stories about and surrounding people of color will sell. There was no need to make it like any other superhero movie and that’s why this’ll be a cornerstone in superhero films like Tim Burton’s Batman or the first Iron Man movie. Black Panther, expands the MCU in the same way Guardians did when it opened the cosmic phase. Wakanda will bring about the greatest technological advances in this Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Which Brings us up to speed and knocking at Marvel’s door awaiting the release of Infinity War. This movie is possibly the most anticipated movie of 2018 and there are more conspiracy theories surround it than imaginable. Which I think is going to add to the energy surrounding this film. The death of a major character will happen but there are some many possibilities that’ll factor into it.
The general theory is that it will be either Captain America or Tony Stark, that’ll die. Which makes sense but with the infinity stones, it’ll be possible to reverse time and bring the dead back to life. So… here’s my guess (POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT! I highly doubt it) Spiderman will die and Tony will absolutely lose it. He’ll see red and attack Thanos, getting himself beaten within an inch of his life and then Captain America will take the death blow in Tony’s place.
Tony will watch his friends die and somehow find a way to bring everyone back… except for cap. He’ll try everything, and nothing will work. They’ll end with Steve’s memorial, a shot of Bucky saying his final goodbye to his suit then taking his shield, acting as the passing of the torch.
Then to brighten it, it’ll end with Peter coming home to Aunt May, who’s worried sick. She says “Oh God, I thought you’d gone and died.” He’d say something like” well… actually” then it would flash to the credits. I’ll be in a theatre waiting as anxiously as everyone else for this movie! It’s already breaking presale ticket records so go buy your seats for this movie now!
