North Atlanta High School brings Heathers to Atlanta

The Kevin Murphy/ Laurence O’Keefe cult favorite, Heathers school edition is coming to North Atlanta High School next week. North Atlanta is the first school in the metro Atlanta area to produce this show. And they’re planning to do some big things with it.

Heathers The Musical (High School Edition) is the darkly delicious comedy. It tells the story of Veronica Sawyer, a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High, the Heathers. Then Veronica falls in love with the dangerously handsome new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica decides to bite the bullet and kiss Heather’s aerobicized butt… but J.D. has another plan for that bullet.”

Heathers is commonly in the same breath of shows like Dear Evan Hansen and Mean Girls.

Because it deals with serious subject matter like bullying, sexual assault, and school violence. The show is notoriously inappropriate. But this new high school edition of the show, doctored by the show’s creators keeps true to the original.

The high school edition topically deals with some of the same the things the students performing in the encounter daily. So why did they choose to bring this story to life now? Here’s what director, Lilliangina Quiñones had to say.

“Number one, the kids like it. But two, I do think that amidst the dark comedy, there is a poignant and important story to tell. And it’s incredibly relevant. You have this story that takes place in 1989 and here we are in 2019 dealing with the same things. Our kids are navigating not feeling safe at school. We also have the topic of suicide, which we – the creative/production team – have taken great care to present in a way that doesn’t glorify but rather helps our audience unpack and process the impact it has on our youth. For me, it became an opportunity not just to do a show for entertainment, but an opportunity for a show that serves as a springboard for conversation.”

North Atlanta High School is sponsored and partnering with NAHS foundation, Independent Actors Playhouse, and Serenbe Playhouse.

North Atlanta High School’s Heathers School Edition is directed by Lilliangina Quiñones and choreographed by Sterling ‘Flash’ McClary and Tamara Irving. Lighting design by Quentin Brown, Sound design by Louis Alfred. And featuring music direction by Jerid Morisco and Adam Brooks and fight choreography by Monty Davis and Ash Anderson. North Atlanta High School’s Heathers School Edition runs March 21- 23. With shows on Thursday at 7pm, Friday at 7pm, and Saturday at 2pm and 7pm.
